Chapter 3 · Bespoke website · Prototype

Open now

Lillo and Sonia’s fruit and veg shop, with its salad bar: from the morning counter to the afternoon smoothie, and in the header, always, whether they’re open.

The problem

Fruttaland sells the same produce two ways: the grocery run, where what matters is what’s in and whether you’ll make it in time, and the fresh counter, chosen on impulse. Online there was only a Facebook page, which answered neither question.

What we did

The site follows the fruit: “the smoothie you’re drinking was on the counter this morning”. Footage is the backdrop of the whole page, from the crate to the glass. What you need on the street — open now, closing time, message on WhatsApp — doesn’t scroll away: it stays in the header from start to finish.

In one line

“Are you open?” always has an answer in sight.

  • Open now — The same screen reduced to its layout: where the eye lands.
Plate II The same screen reduced to its layout: where the eye lands.
  • Open now — A quarter of the way down.
Plate III A quarter of the way down.
  • Open now — Halfway.
    Plate IV Halfway.
  • Open now — Three quarters down.
    Plate V Three quarters down.

The measurements

The first screen arrives in 0.55 s1, without a single line of JavaScript2, and the page shifts by 0.0843 while it loads. In all, 2.54 MB4 across 102 requests.

  1. Largest Contentful Paint. Measured on 23 October 2026 on the prototype, 390×844 phone, simulated slow 4G · 1.6 Mbit/s · 150 ms, CPU slowed down 4×. Our limit is 2.50 s. ↩
  2. The prototype is HTML and CSS: scripts arrive when a feature needs them, not before. ↩
  3. Cumulative Layout Shift: how much the page moves while it arrives. Our limit is 0.1; zero means nothing jumps. ↩
  4. Weight after load, images and frames included. ↩
